NEXT NIGHT: Friday 28th May from 8.00pm. £2.00 door. Poetic Theme: BREAD
As a courtesy to performers latecomers may not be admitted until a suitable break.
With guest poet Helên Thomas who will be launching her new book 'Baker's Dozen: Thirteen Poems about Bread and Dough Products'. Inspired by the rapturous applause received by a rendition of her poem 'Toasty Bread', Helên Thomas has produced a suite of poems dedicated to her love of flour-based carbohydrates. Anyone wishing to purchase a copy is welcome to bring a packet of crumpets for the author. Sufferers of the Atkins diet who may be trying to avoid poems about bread and dough products will be pleased to know that the pamphlet slots nicely into your average toaster.
Over the past few years Helên has made a name for herself as a performance poet who is both versatile and original, fulfilling the roles of 'Poetry Link Organiser' for The Lymm Festival and as part of Warrington's Hot Wire Events alonside Jo Warburton. In July 2003 Helên and Jo were commissioned to write and deliver a ten minute performance poem to commemorate five years of The Lymm Festival. Helên's poems appear in numerous anthologies including 'Shortfuse: The Global Anthology of New Fusion Poetry' (Rattapallax Press) and her own collection 'Hopelessness And Other Hobbies', "A surreal burlesque with permission to rhyme. a lyrical super-hero," (Chloe Poems). "Helên Thomas fuses the best of the performed and written word in her spunky, wildly eccentric and startling poetry. She has the cool, retro style of a female Michael Caine channelling a Stevie Smith: in other words, she is several British originals rolled into one, and probably irreplaceable. If there was any poetic justice, which there isn't always, she'd be the UK's hip chick Larkin of the 21st century - a household name for verse immediate, clear and deeply funny," (Todd Swift. Co-Editor of 'Shortfuse:The Global Anthology of New Fusion Poetry', Rattapallax Press, 2002).
